ISA Trip to Ancient Olympia

ISA Trip to Ancient Olympia

Holding the firm belief that learning can take place well beyond the classroom and the school environment, the 11th grade students of the International School of Athens (ISA), in collaboration with the American Community School (ACS), visited Ancient Olympia for three days of Community Service actions and various IB-related learning experiences.

Students participated in a variety of activities organised by their teachers and in cooperation with different institutions and local ecological organizations. More specifically, students were involved in weeding and clearing a small part of the Botanical Garden of Ancient Olympia, which our school will be sponsoring. They visited the Ancient Olympia archaeological site and museum, where students taking Fine Arts were involved in different activities and conducted science-related experiments at Lake Kaifa. In an effort to promote social sensitivity, awareness and responsibility, students visited the Therapeutic Center for Chronic Illnesses at Lehaina and the Pyrgos, Ilieias Home for the Elderly, where they spent time interacting with the people hosted there. In addition, they offered both institutions a large amount of food products and cleaning items collected with the support and generous offer of the students from all divisions of ISA. Back at the hotel, students attended different workshops, which helped them transfer these experiences into meaningful learning and link them with their academic requirements.

It was impressive and moving to see how ISA students engaged in all activities with seriousness, genuine interest, caring and an open mind, setting as a goal to ensure the ongoing support of the above mentioned organizations.
